NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Volunteers and Friends,
The Literacy Council kicked off the new year in a
new office. We are still unpacking and adjusting to our present
location in suite 208, 670 Superior Court in Medford. We are sharing
the office space with The Gordon Elwood Foundation, S.M.A.R.T., and
others. We hope to have an Open House party soon, but you are always
welcome to drop by for a visit. We have no regular office hours, but
I'm usually at the office on Fridays from 11 A.M. until 1 P.M.
Still, it's best to call before you visit to be sure someone is
there.
Our newest volunteer, Marilyn Wilbur, has been
placed with a student and is working out the bugs of being a
literacy tutor. The first time is always a challenge, but after
trying a few techniques found in our library of manuals, our
volunteers usually find something that clicks with their student.
Tutoring should be a fun learning experience for both the tutor and
student.
We are always looking for new volunteers who would
like to help adults improve their reading skills, prepare for GED,
DMV, Citizenship exams, or help improve our program by becoming a
member of our board. Let your friends know about us.
Have a great spring season. Bob Burger, Chairman

WE'RE IN THIS
TOGETHER by Marilyn KS Wilbur
I'm a new volunteer, not
knowing what I'm getting myself into, but with some guidance,
I'm finding my way.
A student was assigned to me right
off the bat, I'm quite nervous, can I do a good job?
We met, my student and I, and I take
pleasure in saying, he is open and eager to learn.
So not only am I teaching him, he is
also teaching me in many ways. I am always lifted up after we have
met.
I'll take this opportunity to invite
and encourage you, whoever you are, to join us in our quest to
help our fellow beings in their yearning to learn.
To touch another
in a special way brings with it many rewards. Let us each do our
part in whatever way we can to create a better world for each and
everyone of
us. |
